Chapter 15

Maddie woke up with a puddle of drool on her pillow. She had never been a morning person, and it turned out being in a fairy tale didn’t change that.

She was cranky, sluggish, and most of all, hungry. She could really go for a quiche like she had at the café yesterday. In fact, she felt like she could probably wolf down ten of them. She staggered to the kitchen to see what this cottage had to eat.

“Good morning, Belle!” said Belle’s father. “How was your date last night?”

“Thumbs down!” Maddie said, frowning. “What a dud.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. Here, maybe some porridge will cheer you up.”

Porridge? People actually ate that? Maddie always thought it was something made up for Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Well, if it was good enough for Goldilocks, who was Maddie to complain?

Belle’s dad pulled out a chair, and Maddie found herself sitting in front of a big, steaming bowl of… yuck! It looked like baby food: a big glop of lumpy tan mush in a bowl. It was so thick that her spoon stood straight up in the middle of it. As bad as it looked, it smelled even worse. She could barely stand to be near it, let alone eat it. It’s not like she expected chocolate chip waffles for breakfast, but there was no way she was going to settle for this slop.

“Uh, no thanks,” she said, pushing the bowl away.

“You seem to be very choosy lately,” said a voice from behind her. Maddie turned around and saw Jeanette sitting in the next room. “First with your date, now with your breakfast. Care to talk about it?” She waved her hand toward the fainting couch, inviting Maddie to have a seat.

Maddie glared at Belle’s father. “You brought the therapist back?”

“You seemed so unhappy when you got home last night,” he explained. “Just go sit with her for a minute.”

“Actually, I feel like taking a walk,” Maddie said. “I’m going to go into town to score some quiche.”

“Heavens, no!” he replied. “You can’t go into town looking like that!”

“Like what?”

“Here, take a look,” Belle’s dad said. He took a small mirror off the wall and showed it to her.

“Aah!” Maddie screamed when she saw her reflection. There was smeared makeup all over her cheeks and bags underneath her eyes. Tiny hairs sprouted above her upper lip and on her chin, and she had a major case of bed head. Maddie thought back to the time Holden took the picture of her in the morning and Instagrammed it so the whole school could see. At least there was no social media in fairy tales. Still, though, she definitely needed to freshen up before going out in public.

“Thanks for the heads-up,” she said to Belle’s father. “I guess even Belle can have morning face.”

“You mean you?” Jeanette replied.

“Huh?”

“You called yourself Belle again. You do know you’re Belle, right?”

“Ugh, I need to get out of here!” Maddie groaned.

She bent over the sink and began to wash her makeup off.
